Excellence Since 1908

Over a century ago in upstate South Carolina, an orphanage began producing monuments as a means to generate income.  At that same time in a little town called Hartsville, half-way across the state,  farmer John Francis Brown began seeking an activity to fill his slow off-season.  When he found out that the orphanage needed help selling their monuments, he stepped right in to help.  Traveling by horse and buggy, he began assisting families with their monument needs across the developing Pee Dee region.

His part-time hobby became a passion, and in 1908, he founded Hartsville Marble Works on Main Street in Hartsville, SC, establishing what is now more than a century of service excellence across the southeastern United States.

Brookgreen Gardens Memorial

Brookgreen Gardens

For over 60 years, Brown Memorials has been the choice of Brookgreen Gardens.  We’ve designed and produced many of the signs, pedestals, and other stone features in the beautiful gardens.

Brookgreen Gardens, located in Murrells Inlet, is one the world’s most premiere sculpture gardens.

Florence Veterans Park Memorials

Florence Veterans Park

The Florence Veterans Park is among the finest veterans parks in the Southeastern United States.

Brown Memorials has had the privilege to be involved in the design and construction of nearly all of the parks memorial features.  Several of our veterans memorial features at the park have received international acclaim and award.  Award winning features include the Desert Storm Memorial, US Air Force Memorial, US Army memorial, and the park’s central veterans memorial feature.

Gamble Kingpin Bowling Memorial

Roger “Kingpin” Gamble

Roger “Kingpin” Gambles’ life centered around his love of bowling.  His memorial is inspired by design characteristic of a retro bowling alley.  His likeness is artist etched in a ‘striking’ pose.

In 2017, Roger’s memorial was named the Best Small Monument in North America by the American  Institute of Commemorative Art.

Butterfly Stone Memorial

Ella Carbaugh

Ella Carbaugh’s memorial is a shimmering example of creativity in headstone design. The memorial forms the shape of a butterfly; its body made of colorful pink and purple glass fused with paintings of Ella’s footprints. The iridized glass sparkles in the sunlight. The wings of the butterfly are made of select grey granite.

This memorial is one of many created by Brown Memorials at Magnolia Cemetery in Hartsville, SC.
