How to Apply for FEMA covid-19 funeral assistance

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an emotional and financial impact on many families. If you lost a loved one to COVID-19, and meet all eligibility requirements, FEMA Funeral Assistance may reimburse you up to $9,000 of funeral expenses.

FEMA lists a number of items and services eligible for COVID-19 funeral assistance reimbursement. The list includes a casket or urn, burial plot or cremation niche, marker or headstone, funeral ceremony, and more.

Applications opened on April 12, 2021 and can only be submitted by phone. Since its launch, the FEMA call center has been overwhelmed with callers, causing technical issues and long wait times. If you have trouble getting through keep trying, and remember there is currently no application deadline. The queue times should ease up a bit down the road.

There have also been reports of fraud. FEMA will not contact you unless you call them and apply first. Always exercise caution.
