Sumter, South Carolina has a long and varied history dating back to the early 1800s. The area was named after Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter after it was first settled by the English in the 1740s. Sumter County was established in 1800, and the town of Sumter was established in 1845.
Sumter's burial practices have evolved over time, with various cemeteries serving as final resting places for the town's citizens. The Sumter Cemetery, established in 1831, is Sumter's most well known cemetery and attracts the most historians and cemetery explorers.
Other notable cemeteries in the area include Evergreen Memorial Park and the Old St. Anne's Cemetery which dates back to the early 1800s and contains the graves of some of Sumter's earliest settlers.

Sumter Cemetery
Sumter Cemetery is a historic, non-profit perpetual care cemetery established in 1831 on 5 acres of land donated by Mr. Thomas Flowers. The cemetery has grown into a 65 acre serene and beautiful landmark that exudes an atmosphere of reverence, and is the final resting place of many of Sumter’s most notable residents. Many impressive mausoleums and monuments memorialize the the men and women of Sumter’s past - especially in the oldest sections of the cemetery.
Much of the early history of the cemetery is shrouded in mystery due to a lack of good record keeping. In time, The Sumter Cemetery Association was formed to bring structure to the cemetery. Sumter Cemetery’s first president was Mr. C.M. Hurst. The cemetery has strong ties to the veterans community, hosting approximately 2,000 graves of veterans of all wars fought since the cemetery’s founding.
The cemetery is still very active today with approximately 70 burials per year, and has enough open land to serve Sumter residents for many decades to come.

Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter has become the city’s most active place of burial. Over the last decade, the cemetery has averaged 190 burials per year. Evergreen is a flat-only cemetery. All memorials must be made of flat bronze or flat granite grave markers and strict sizes are enforced.
